This is not the first time Instagram has launched a standalone app. Instead people have to post them to other social media channels such as Facebook or Instagram, although users can set this up automatically. The video then loops, playing the images backwards and forwards to create the ‘Boomerang’ effect. It works by taking a burst of five photos and stitching them together into a one-second video.
